One Inch Village

Reimagining learning across place, culture, and class.

In a small pocket park in central Shanghai, something unusual happened.

Children from migrant worker families played alongside local Shanghainese kids and children from international households. Some came from wealth; others from hardship. They debated philosophy, played music, ran through imagined worlds together. No tuition, no walls. Just a shared space of laughter, questions, and growing together. We called it a “learning village inside the city.”

This was the beginning of One Inch Village—a micro-project founded by our team at One Inch Education in 2021 to explore educational equity in urban China.

When COVID struck, the park fell silent. But the vision stayed alive.

In 2023, we relaunched One Inch Village as a global online dialogue camp.

With just one internet connection, we now connect Chinese-speaking children across the world—spanning continents, cultures, and class backgrounds.

They meet online to debate, create, and think deeply together. Some live in UK boarding schools, others in county towns in inland China. Here, they become part of the same conversation.

We believe this is what education should be: shared, thoughtful, and borderless.

Why It Matters

Children from marginalised or mobile backgrounds often lack spaces for deep thinking and dialogue.

Global mobility risks deepening educational inequality.

We believe access to philosophical inquiry and cultural exchange should not depend on postcode or passport.
