Philosophy Walks Club – Year in Review

Over the past year, our young “Philosophy Explorers” have taken their curiosity beyond the classroom, walking into some of London’s most inspiring spaces. We have wandered through the galleries of the Science Museum, listened to birdsong at the London Wetland Centre, explored the historic gardens of Fulham Palace, and stretched our legs (and our thinking) in Hyde Park.

Each outing combines movement, observation, and conversation. In nature, the children sketch what they see, then share their impressions with one another. In museums, they follow their questions—sometimes down unexpected paths—discussing ideas sparked by what they’ve discovered. Through these activities, they practise staying with a question, exploring it from different angles, and listening deeply to others’ viewpoints.

Equally important, our sessions are conducted in Chinese, allowing children to engage in rich, nuanced discussions and maintain a high level of expressive ability in their mother tongue. This blend of physical exploration, philosophical dialogue, and bilingual expression helps them develop both critical thinking and cultural confidence.

As we look ahead to the new term, we invite new members to join us on our walks. Whether your child is a natural questioner, an aspiring storyteller, or simply curious about the world, the Philosophy Walks Club offers a unique way to grow minds, friendships, and perspectives—one step at a time.

About the Mentor – Dr. Tim Yan

Dr. Tim Yan is an educator with a unique blend of academic depth and hands-on teaching experience. Holding a PhD in Philosophy from a top Chinese university, he has taught at Shanghai University and later trained as a primary school teacher in the UK, earning his Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). His career spans university lecturing, children’s philosophy (P4C) training, and cross-cultural education consultancy.

Tim has a particular gift for helping children develop their ability to think critically, express themselves clearly, and engage in meaningful dialogue. He believes that philosophy is not an abstract subject reserved for adults, but a practical tool that children can use to make sense of the world and their place in it. In his sessions, every question is welcomed, and every perspective is valued.

By combining his background in philosophy, his experience in British classrooms, and his passion for bilingual learning, Tim creates learning environments that are both intellectually stimulating and emotionally supportive. He sees each walk, each question, and each conversation as an opportunity for children to grow in confidence, empathy, and understanding.
